Duke of Edinburgh's Hillary Award Scheme

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Hillary Award Scheme has quickly been established as a corner stone of life at Ormiston Senior College.

The scheme is a comprehensive, co-curricular programme that provides opportunities for students to develop skills in leadership, self-reliance and responsibility along with a sense of place in the wider world. This year over 90% of our students are well on the way to achieving their Bronze Award. They have participated in an over-night training tramp to the Pinnacles in the Coromandel in preparation for their adventurous journey later in the year. They have taken up a new skill such as learning a musical instrument, joined a sports team or dance group and have given back to the community through our weekly service programme.

The Bronze and Silver Awards challenge participants in four areas of life:
• SERVICE: giving help in the local community
• SKILLS: any non-physical hobby, skill or interest
• PHYSICAL RECREATION: sport, dance and fitness
• ADVENTUROUS JOURNEY: training for, practising and completing a journey on foot, horseback, boat or cycle.
