Pastoral Care
All international and local students will be allocated a “Learning Advisor” who meets with each student on a daily basis and who is responsible for the student's welfare. In addition, Tim Botting (Senior Leader, Wellbeing) will be responsible for ensuring the pastoral care needs of international students are met along with the college's Counsellor. The Principal, Maurie Jackways, also acts as the International Student Director and he will be available on a daily basis should any students wish to meet with him formally or informally to discuss any aspect of their international student experience. The Homestay Manager is Mrs Claire Gunn. Tim Botting, Claire Gunn and Maurie Jackways
Student Orientation
Students will be emailed in advance, or given when they arrive, a Student Handbook. This orientation booklet will include information about the school and local area. A copy is available by clicking here. Once the student has arrived in New Zealand they will be met at the airport by the International Student Director (ISD) or the Homestay Manager. Upon arriving at the college the ISD will ensure that both the Counsellor and Senior Leader, Wellbeing, have met and familiarised the student with the pastoral care needs and information about the college.
The student will then meet the Learning Advisor (LA). The LA is the most important staff member for any international student as they meet with each of their students on a daily basis. The LA is responsible for all of the pastoral care issues for each of their students (usually 8 or 9). The LA will “buddy” all new students with a local student who will assist the student to become familiar with both the school and local area. The orientation handbook “Student Handbook” will also assist the student with familiarity around the local customs and prices.
Assistance for students adapting to New Zealand
The Learning Advisor will be a key person in ensuring that international students are comfortable in their school and home enviornment. In addition, the handbook provides details about the College's Guidance and Counselling services and contacts for local medical and support agencies. The Counsellor will meet all of the international students as a group to explain the college systems and services. The students will be given a list of all the other international students currently at the College including their respective Homestay names and contact details. They will also be given names and contact numbers of other people living in the area who are happy to talk with our international students in their native language. We hope that any concerns, complaints or issues can be dealt with as quickly and easily as possible to ensure that International Students feel supported and comfortable in their home and school lives. Students can at any time contact their Learning Advisor, Senior Leader (Wellbeing) or the International Students Director to discuss any aspect of their homestay or school experiences. If students are not satisfied with how the issue has been resolved, then students can ask the Board of Trustees to consider the matter.
Specific Complaints Procedures
International students complete feedback forms on all aspects of their Homestay and School life. Should any complaints come to light from these or through other avenues, the International Students Director (ISD) would deal with them in the first instance. The ISD may need to contact the Homestay family or refer the student to the Learning Advisor. In some cases they may need to go back to the parents or agent responsible for the student coming to the college. If the complaint is about the International Students Director or the way they have handled the initial complaint, the student can take their concerns to the International Education Appeal Authority (IEAA).
