Learning Advisors and LA Time
Ormiston Senior College's unique Learning Advisor (LA) system is designed to empower student success. Every student is paired with a dedicated teacher, their Learning Advisor, who ideally mentors them throughout their three years at the college. These small LA groups, with around 20 students, meet several times a week during dedicated LA time.
LA time is specifically timetabled to ensure effective personalisation and foster strong relationships between Learning Advisors and their students. During these sessions, students and their Learning Advisors collaboratively set goals, reflect on academic progress, and discuss their learning journey.
This personalised approach ensures each student has consistent support for their academic and social growth. Learning Advisors play a crucial role in tracking NCEA progress, fostering student responsibility for their own learning, and acting as a vital link between the school and home. Beyond academics, they encourage participation in wider college life and provide essential guidance for future pathways, including career planning and life beyond school.
OSC Timetable
Ormiston Senior College operates with a dynamic timetable that prioritises student-centred learning, including dedicated "flexed days" to enhance individual growth and achievement.
The regular timetable structures the week for core-subject learning, ensuring students cover the breadth of their curriculum. However, woven into this structure are specific flexed days, which are designed to provide students with greater autonomy and personalised learning opportunities. On these days, the regular class schedule is adjusted, allowing students to:
-
Engage in independent learning: Students can use this time to catch up on work, delve deeper into areas of interest, or pursue personal projects.
-
Seek targeted support: They can meet with teachers for one-on-one help, attend smaller group tutorials, or receive intervention for specific subjects.
-
Collaborate and extend their learning: Flexed days offer time for students to work together on interdisciplinary projects, engage in enrichment activities, or participate in clubs and extracurriculars that align with their passions.
-
Develop self-management skills: By having choice and responsibility over their learning during these periods, students hone crucial skills for university and beyond, such as time management, goal setting, and independent problem-solving.
This innovative approach to the timetable, including the integration of flexed days, ensures that Ormiston Senior College provides a flexible and responsive learning environment that caters to the diverse needs and aspirations of its students, fostering both academic excellence and essential life skills.

I-Times
Independent Learning Times
Ormiston Senior College embraces a unique approach to learning through its i-times or Independent Learning Times. These timetabled periods empower pupils to take ownership of their education by setting specific goals, choosing their work environment, and deciding which subjects and tasks to focus on. During i-times, students can access teacher support and utilise subject-specific learning guides, fostering a personalised and self-managed learning experience that is central to the college's commitment to developing independent and responsible learners.

Learning Guides
At Ormiston Senior College, Learning Guides are a core component of our curriculum design principles, providing a structured yet flexible framework for student-centered learning. Essentially, a Learning Guide (which can be electronic or paper-based) serves as a roadmap, outlining the activities and experiences students engage with to grasp key concepts and develop essential skills. Large topics are typically segmented into smaller units, each representing about one to two weeks of learning.
Here's a breakdown of what Learning Guides entail:
Key Characteristics of Learning Guides:
-
Clear Learning Purpose: Each guide clearly communicates its learning objectives, making the "big ideas" or skills students will develop readily apparent. These objectives are designed to align seamlessly with our broader programs of learning.
-
Student-Centered Journey: Learning Guides are crafted to put students at the heart of their educational experience. The tasks are primarily student-centered, guiding them through a progressive journey of discovery and application.
-
Differentiated Learning: We recognize that students learn in diverse ways. Therefore, Learning Guides offer differentiation in terms of:
-
Process: How students engage with the material.
-
Context: The situations or scenarios in which learning occurs.
-
Product: The ways in which students demonstrate their understanding.
-
Content: The specific information or skills being learned.
-
-
Independent Learning Potential: Learning Guides are designed to empower students to learn autonomously, even without direct teacher intervention.
-
Varied Learning Experiences: To maintain engagement and cater to different learning styles, Learning Guides incorporate a variety of activities and approaches, both within a single guide and across different guides.
-
Explicit Learning Processes: The guides explicitly highlight desirable learning behaviours (e.g., collaboration norms) and critical thinking skills, helping students develop effective learning strategies.
-
Challenging and Engaging: Tasks within the guides are designed to offer an appropriate level of challenge, ensuring students remain engaged and motivated throughout their learning journey.
-
Monitored Progress: Learning progress is regularly monitored through various methods, including self-assessments, reflections, peer feedback, formative assessments, diagnostic assessments, and other checkpoints.
-
Indicated Timeframes: Each guide provides clear indications of the expected timeframes for completing activities and units of work.
Why We Use a Learning Guide System:
Our Learning Guide System provides a robust framework for personalised learning at Ormiston Senior College, offering several key advantages:
-
Common Language: It establishes a consistent vocabulary and understanding of learning expectations across the entire school.
-
Common Format/Features: Within each learning area, guides share a similar structure and features, promoting familiarity and ease of navigation for students.
-
Easy Monitoring and Reporting: Learning Guides facilitate efficient monitoring of student progress and streamlined reporting for Learning Advisors.
-
Self-Pacing and Self-Management: Students are empowered to manage their own learning pace, fostering essential self-management skills.
-
Flexible Assessment: The system supports a flexible approach to assessment, allowing for diverse ways in which students can demonstrate their learning.
-
Built-in Accountability: Learning Guides inherently promote student accountability for their own learning journey.

Subject Selections
Year 11 Subjects
At Ormiston Senior College, Year 11 operates on a two-semester subject selection model. Students take year-long English and Mathematics, plus six option subjects (three per semester). This provides flexibility, allowing students to explore diverse interests and build a strong foundation for NCEA Level 2. It's a dynamic approach, empowering students to tailor their academic pathways effectively.
NCEA Level 2 Subjects
At Ormiston Senior College, NCEA Level 2 (typically Year 12) subject selection focuses on specialisation. Students choose courses aligning with their strengths and future goals, guided by their Learning Advisors. To achieve NCEA Level 2, students need 60 credits at Level 2 or above, plus their Level 1 Literacy and Numeracy requirements (10 credits each). This flexible approach ensures students gain the necessary depth of knowledge and credits for progression to NCEA Level 3, University Entrance, or vocational pathways.
NCEA Level 3
Subjects
At Ormiston Senior College, NCEA Level 3 (typically Year 13) subject selection is highly focused on future pathways, whether it be university, polytechnic, or employment. Students choose a specialised programme of study, often comprising five subjects, to meet specific tertiary entrance requirements or industry needs. To gain NCEA Level 3, students require 60 credits at Level 3 or above, plus the 10 Literacy and 10 Numeracy credits from Level 1. This stage provides the academic depth crucial for success beyond school.
Careers and Pathways
The Careers Centre at Ormiston Senior College is pivotal to subject selection. They provide personalised guidance, workshops, and resources like Career Central to help students align their subject choices with future aspirations. By understanding tertiary requirements and career pathways, they ensure students select subjects that maximise their opportunities for university, polytechnic, or employment, making informed decisions for life beyond school.
Stationery
Students bring their own stationery throughout the year.
A stationery list is provided for each Year level according to subject. Stationery can be purchased online from the Office Max Website on www.myschool.co.nz/ormistoncollege.
Each student is expected to have a planner. These can be purchased from the school at reception at the start of the year.
